Seafarers held by Somali pirates

July 7, 2010: There are currently at least 365 hostages held by Somali pirates.

In fact, there are probably more than that being held, as most sources are not counting the Yemeni dhows which are hijacked along with their crew. These dhows are taken in order to provide motherships for pirates, enabling the pirates to attack targets further out to sea than they could in their small skiffs. These men are usually held until the pirates have no more need of them or their vessel, and are not ransomed…
