The UK election and Shipping…
The UK election is just a week away and MP’s are busily trying to convert undecided voters to their way of thinking.
Whilst shipping isn’t exactly a ‘big issue’ ticket for the parties, we invited MP’s to put forward their views on the maritime scene to the ShippingPodcasts audience. (With over 200,000 downloads from ShippingPodcasts.com so far this year, there are bound to be some undecided voters in the audience!)
We wanted to hear them talk about their views on:
- the back rating of business rates for ports
- their position on the UK tonnage tax
- their view on whether the national minimum pay should apply for seafarers on UK ships in UK waters
- maritime training
The Conservative Shadow Transport Minister, Julian Brazier responded (27 April) and you can hear his responses here
The Labour office of Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Adonis called (28 April) to say that he was too busy to give his views on Shipping, and in any case, we should probably wait and see who the next Minister responsible for Shipping will be…
The Liberal Democrats and Greens have yet to respond but we will try them again…
